To support Diabetes Awareness Month, Heidelberg Hospital hosted a session on November 12.
The event aimed to promote healthy living, physical activity, and an understanding of diabetes prevention among staff.
The initiative was part of the hospital’s employee wellness programme. It encouraged staff to improve their health through regular exercise, nutrition awareness, and education on lifestyle-related diseases, like diabetes.
The session included an aerobics workout that saw staff from various departments join in, fostering teamwork and morale. It also highlighted the role of regular exercise in preventing chronic illnesses and maintaining well-being.
Sandile Ramothibe from the hospital’s food service unit said the wellness activities create a healthier workplace.
“Regular exercise is an important part of staying healthy, and through initiatives like Wellness Wednesday, we are supporting diabetes awareness and encouraging a culture of self-care among staff,” he said.
Ramothibe reiterated the importance of a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

“Many people underestimate how lifestyle choices affect their health. Diabetes is a condition that one can manage or even prevent through small but consistent changes in daily habits.
“By regularly exercising, eating balanced meals, staying hydrated and managing stress, we can significantly reduce the risks associated with this disease.
“These sessions also give us a chance to connect as colleagues, relieve work-related stress and remind each other of the importance of looking after ourselves. When staff are healthy, they are happier, more productive and better equipped to care for our patients. Wellness Wednesday has become more than just a day of exercise. It is a movement that brings us together in the spirit of health and positivity,” said Ramothibe.
Ramothibe added that through their Wellness Wednesday, the hospital continues to champion prevention and wellness, and remains committed to fostering a culture where employees prioritise their physical and mental well-being for themselves and the benefit of the community they serve.
